I thought it was funny when my husband came home with another woman and said he wanted her to be his second wife. But when I saw that he was being serious, I told him I would agree as long as he met one condition. He wasn’t expecting that state to happen.
Today I’m ready to talk about what happened a week ago, something I never thought I’d say.
Things started going wrong a few months ago when my eight-year-old husband Jack started acting strangely.
We were no longer lovers, but our marriage was strong. That’s what I thought, anyway.
The changes in Jack’s mood were slow at first.
He had always had a lot of thoughts, but all of a sudden he started talking about “alternative lifestyles” as if he had found a new way to live.
“You know,” he said one night as he scrolled through his phone, “some people are really into living in strange ways.” “It makes you think about what does and doesn’t work.”
I asked, “Like what?”
He said something like, “Oh, I don’t know.” “Just… things to help life along.”
I thought he meant something nice, like simplicity or one of those eco-friendly ways of living.
The thing is, Jack always jumped right into the latest trends. He was crazy about woodworking at one point, and he swore he’d open a food truck at another.
It always died out in the end. I didn’t think this time would be any different.
