The marriage is over…I won’t touch you, not even if you shaped yourself into an hourglass!” David tells Megan she’s fat and then dumps her for his secretary. Eventually, though, fate changes things, and David pays for what he did.

As Megan set the table with a drink, a chicken roast, and all the treats David loved, the smell of spices cooking filled the air. “Great!” she said with a sigh.

“David, you’re back!” Megan screamed.

“What the hell are you wearing?” This makes you look fat!” David made fun of them.

“Because?” Honey, don’t you like this dress? “Today is our fifth wedding anniversary,” Megan said in a whisper, her voice so soft that it was like a plea lost in the wind. “Forgot?”

He snapped his teeth together and said, “Of course not.”

Megan’s eyes had a spark of hope in them. She thought those were Paris tickets. David knew she wanted to spend Christmas in Paris.

He told her, “I have something for you.” He took an envelope out of his pocket.

Tears made her stutter as she moved forward. “I believed these were Paris tickets…”What is this?”

The harsh word “divorce” stabbed her in the eyes. “Tell me it’s a joke…” Megan whispered, her eyes filled with tears.

There was a huge bark in the room when David laughed. “I don’t have time to play jokes with you.” “Because I hate you.”

“Why?” Megan tried hard to whisper.

“Why?” David scowled. “Look at yourself in the mirror, and you’ll understand.”

“Please fix this,” she begged, her voice breaking.

“I’m just getting ready to leave today.” “Enough with you,” he said with a frown.

“David, please…”You and I can go to therapy together. Maybe get things in order. “I love you…” Megan chased David and tried to stop him from putting his clothes and other things he needed in his bag.

“Teacher?” He laughed. “Remember, you’re sick, not me!”

David turned away and stomped down the hall with his bag. “I don’t have to explain myself to you.” The marriage is over. “Finally I’m free,” he said as he reached for the door.

“Please, David.” Megan begged, “Don’t leave me!”

“You don’t have time for those stupid games, okay?” A cruel lack of care showed on David’s face as he brushed past Megan. “Besides, someone is waiting for me in the car,” he said, a strange kind of happiness shining in his eyes.

Megan choked, and through her tears, her voice was hard to hear. “David, who is it?” Why do you want to hurt me like this?”

David made fun of Megan and said, “Look at yourself.” “I used to love how beautiful you were, but now I don’t.” A lot of fat has grown on top of your curvy shape. “Oh no, don’t start now…”

Hey, Jessica! David went on. “Do you remember my secretary?” Always look good, fit, and sexy!”

“How could you be cheating on me?” Megan stuttered, and tears ran down her pale face in hot trails. “Will Jessica work with your secretary?”

“Wham!” David snapped, and his eyes lit up with disgusting happiness. “One ticket for me and one for the future I deserve.” Then he opened the door and grabbed his bag.

“And don’t forget to record the divorce!” Megan could barely breathe when David slammed the door shut and his voice boomed.

Megan whispered as she woke up with a start, “This isn’t the end.” Megan put her wedding pictures and other small items in an iron bucket as the day went on. She soaked them in gasoline and set them on fire with a hand that was shaking.

Suddenly, she was startled by a hard knock. Veronica, her best friend, called. She growled, “What’s wrong with you, Meg?” “All week I’ve been calling you.”

Megan choked and said, “He’s gone.” The words came out like broken glass. “Left me for someone else.”

“David?” “That’s not a surprise, Meg,” Veronica replied. “What a jerk!” “Did I not warn you?”

Megan said, “You might be right.” “How do I move on?”

Veronica spoke up, sounding worried, “Honey,You look awful. You need to see a doctor. Help you out. Do not think about that cheater.

“Veronica, it’s not that simple.” Megan said, “I loved him,” as she put her head on Veronica’s shoulder. “Now what?”

Veronica smiled and said, “You pick up the pieces, sweetheart. And find happiness. The kind that doesn’t depend on other people being happy for you.”

Megan, who was very sad, asked, “How am I going to do that?”

With a sly grin on her face, Veronica grabbed Megan’s phone. “Girl, it’s time you stopped crying over the Titanic and got on a new ship!” As quickly as she could, she downloaded a dating app and made a description that made Megan gasp.

“You deserve to be happy…””Don’t whine about some douchebag who dumped you,” Veronica said with a wink as she put the phone in Megan’s hand.

That night, Megan clicked on the app while lying on the couch, her heart skip a beat.

“Hi, you look beautiful!” Megan was shocked when a message appeared out of the blue. After getting out of the shower, she only had a towel over her body and patches under her eyes.

Megan threw her phone onto the couch and quickly closed the app with a swipe.

“Did I make you run away?” As soon as Megan’s face showed up on the screen, a stranger who was still waiting for her asked in a low voice.

She said, “It’s…okay.” “This is so new to me.”

He laughed and said, “Neither am I.” “But hey, who knows? Maybe we can both get used to it.”

The person on the other end said his name was Robert. He held out his hand and said, “Call me Rob.”

“Megan,” she answered. “My friends call me Meg!”

“Hi Meg! It’s nice to meet you!” Robert went on, and Megan felt like she was floating in the air in a dream world where flowers and dandelions were as big as elephants. He also said, “You have such a beautiful smile.”

“This is my first time here…I clicked a button by chance. My live stream starts right away!” Megan laughed, making her cheeks red with shame.

“Why don’ I make it up to you?” He asked with bright eyes. “What’s for dinner tonight?”

Megan breathed “Yes,” and her heart skipped a beat.

Robert smiled bigger and then winked. “Then I’ll see you at La Café Bean at eight.”

Megan stood in front of her closet after a hot shower, smelling like English roses and shea butter oil. With just a little mascara, blush, and her favorite sweet perfume, along with very little jewelry, she let her natural beauty shine through.

Tonight, she was ready to meet the man on the other side of the screen and see if the dating app on her phone could paint a pretty picture of a good future.

Megan stopped reaching for the doorknob just as she did. When David walked in, all of her happiness and excitement went away like mist.

“Moving day, sweetheart,” he hissed, adding a mean edge to his voice. A smile formed on his lips as he looked at her. “Heading somewhere tonight?” he asked in a low voice.

Megan stuttered, “Just…out,” as she clung to her purse uncomfortably.

“Did you sign the papers yet?” He barked, and his eyes got narrow.

Megan choked out, “It’s in the other pocket.” Her voice was shaking.

Megan’s heart beat fast when her phone rang. It was from Robert, asking if she would like him to pick her up. “Are you done?” She looked at David.

“Are we ready to move on now?” His eyes got smaller. “Do you really think I wouldn’t notice this… sudden makeover?”

As David jumped forward, the floor seemed to tilt under her. He growled, “Get this straight!” “They’ll leave no matter who you find.” “No amount of makeup can hide the fact that you’re dull and ugly.”

She whispered, “You’re wrong.” Her voice was shaking but firm. “I’m broken, but I’m not ugly.”

David didn’t like Megan’s sudden bravado. His hand was rough, and he grabbed her diamond necklace. The chain snapped against her skin.

Megan said in a shocked whisper, “That was my wedding present.”

“Think about renting it. Like how we’re married. “Paid for, used, and thrown away!” he laughed.

David gave her one last, intense look, then grabbed his bag and slammed the door shut.

Megan stumbled towards her phone while her tears made it hard for her to see. The date she was so looking forward to now seemed like a cruel joke. The only thing worse was being stuck in her tears. After getting up, she went outside into the moonlight and waved at a cab that was coming up behind her.

Not long after that, she was in La Café Bean. The happiness in her eyes went away when she got to the table, though. It wasn’t full.

As she walked up to the waiter, her voice was barely above a whisper because she was so scared. “Have you seen my date?” Rob? “He was sitting there.”

“He just left, miss.” The waiter’s face showed that he was confused.

A person came out from behind her just as she was fighting the storm of feelings inside her. With an embarrassed grin, Robert held out a bunch of lilies.

“Megan, I’m so sorry I made you look bad on the livestream,” he said in a low voice. “But seeing how natural you are…I fell in love with you the moment I saw you. I’m sorry, I had to go get these for you.

She was about to speak when she let out a sneeze that broke the moment.

“Thank you!” Robert laughed.

Megan sneezed some more, sending pollen all over the table. Rob’s brow wrinkled in worry. “Hey, you could have told me you’re bad for flowers.”

“It’s okay.” “That was such a nice thing to do,” Megan replied with a warm smile.

“Tell me about yourself.” “What do you do for a living?” Megan pushed, and her voice got stronger.

Robert smiled and said, “I’m a doctor.” “As a doctor, I can tell you that those lilies make you sick.”

He told a waiter, “Please take these beauties away.”

An honest, out-of-the-blue laugh came up in her chest.

Rob’s eyes got wrinkled around the edges. “What makes you laugh?” he asked.

Megan happily said, “It’s a long story.” “I guess I should have gone to the doctor after all!”

After a short time, her phone rang. There was a GIF on the screen that looked like a bunch of bright red roses. “Couldn’t leave you without some flowers,” Robert said with a laugh.

He said in a whisper, “Tell me everything about you.” “Your wildest dreams, fears, and stories.” Everything.

Megan took a weak breath. In her speech, she talked about David, their dark marriage, dashed dreams, and a hurt heart. She told him that she had never believed in true love before she met Robert.

After the lovely evening was over, Megan lay in bed and looked at a picture of Rob on her phone. She had no idea that this kind of happiness existed.

A few months went by.

After a rough split, Megan found herself in a fancy restaurant with lots of clattering silverware. She was deep in her phone call when she heard a voice she knew.

“Megan!”

Megan turned around and saw David. It was a strange sight to see after months of being away from him because of the split.

She forced a smile and said, “Hi, David.”

“Megan.” “You look great!” He gave a timid smile.

Megan responded with a tight voice, “I’m fine.” “And you?”

David’s smile faded as he said, “Jessica and I are splitting up.”

Megan said, “I’m sorry,” but the words were empty and sad.

“Don’t be.” I earned this. “Leaving you…it was the worst mistake of my life,” David said to her in a low voice.

Megan didn’t say anything because she didn’t know how to get around in this new place.

David begged Megan, “Please,” as he waited for her answer. “I’ll do anything to make you pleased.” Please give me one more chance.

But before Megan could answer, a man’s voice broke the silence. “Excuse me, could I assist you?”

David’s eyes got really big with shock, and the air was filled with tension and sadness that David hadn’t expected.

“Sorry, who are you?” He spit.

Welcome, Rob! I’m Megan’s fiancé. Robert answered.

David was hit hard by the words. Megan put her hand on Robert’s arm and her face turned red. As it turns out, David, Rob and I are getting married soon!

“Are you ready, sweetheart?” Robert looked at Megan with sparkling eyes.

“Okay, honey, let’s go.” David, see you!” Megan smiled and got up from her seat.

Megan put her hand on Robert’s and walked away, leaving David alone with the ghosts of his past. His happiness was like sand in his fingers.
