When my ex-husband unexpectedly informed me that he wanted to get back in touch with our daughter, I believed, against my better judgment, that perhaps he had finally realized what he had been losing out on. Maybe, after being absent for a number of years, he was finally prepared to be the father she deserved to have.
My mistake could hardly have been more egregious. My blood began to boil in a manner that I am unable to adequately describe when I learned the true cause for his sudden interest in her.
Being the sole parent of a child that is five years old is never an easy task. Since the day that my ex-husband, Daniel, made the decision that living with the woman he had been having an affair with was more essential than staying with his family, I have been doing it by myself.
A little over three years ago, Daniel broke up with me. Sophie, our daughter, had just turned two for the first time at that time. The fact that I was working night shifts at the hospital and juggling unending piles of laundry left me feeling fatigued, but I believed that we were in this together. He decided to move in with her instead of packing his belongings and moving into an apartment that was only a few blocks away.
I did not ask him to remain with me. I couldn’t do that because of my pride. However, as Sophie got older, the questions started to come up.
The question is, “Why doesn’t Daddy come get me?”
To what extent does Daddy no longer love me?
At each and every one of her inquiries, I had the sensation that someone was ripping a piece of my heart out.
Even when it was just the two of us, I did everything in my power to ensure that she had a holistic experience throughout her life. I took on additional shifts at the hospital so that I could afford to buy her nice clothes and pay for a good daycare. It was my responsibility to ensure that she had a warm bed to sleep in, books to read, and toys to play with each and every night.
I tried everything I could think of, but I was unable to replace the void that her father had left behind. At school, she would observe other children who had both of their parents picking them up, discussing their plans for the weekend, or offering assistance with their school projects. Whenever she returned home, she would express her desire for her father to be present in order to read her stories before sleep or to watch her school performance.
In the end, I forced myself to swallow my pride and gave him a call.
I shared with him how much she looked forward to seeing him and how she would sometimes cry herself to sleep, wondering why he was not present. To at least make an effort to be the kind of parent she deserved, I urged him to come see her.
During our conversation over the phone, I told Daniel, “She asks for you each and every day.” Is it not possible for you to catch up with her every once in a while?
His tone was uninteresting as he said, “I’m busy, Mia.” “I am currently in the process of constructing a new life. I have faith in you.”
On her birthdays, he did not show up to celebrate. Neither when she got her first bike nor when she lost her first tooth did he come to see her about it. I convinced myself that he was too preoccupied with his new relationship and too preoccupied with making plans for a life that was picture-perfect with someone else.
The situation remained the same up to the previous week.
When I saw his name flash on my phone, it was something that happened on a typical Friday morning. Initially, my first reaction was to disregard it. But I had to respond because of something.
“Mia,” he continued, his voice more gentle than I’d heard it in years, “I’ve been thinking a lot.” Because of how I’ve been, I feel humiliated. I would like to get back in touch with Sophie.
This made my heart ache. Is it true that he desired to return after three years of almost complete silence?
Do you mind if I take her for the weekend? It was just the two of us,” he went on to say. “I want to demonstrate to her that I still like her. Although I have committed errors, I am determined to make things right.
Over the past few days, Sophie had not been inquiring about her father. From grieving for him to completely ignoring his name, she had gone through a transition. Not only did the tears sting, but the quiet hurt even more.
What are your intentions with regard to this matter? I inquired about it. “Because if you were to hurt her once more—”
In response, he said, “I’m serious.” “This is not about us; it is about her.”
I responded with a yes. Despite the fact that I felt a great deal of resentment toward him for what he had done to me, I was unable to deny Sophie the opportunity to have her father in her life, provided that he was truly willing to be there for her. Every child has the right to know from their parents that they are loved.
Pajamas, food, her beloved stuffed rabbit, and the pink clothing that she cherished were all items that I carefully put into her unicorn backpack on that particular Saturday morning. I gave her a bear embrace and informed her that her father was going to commit the entire weekend to spending time with her.
She radiated happiness. “Seriously?”
“That’s so true, my darling.”
On Sunday at five o’clock, Daniel made a commitment to bring her back.
When they drove away, I reassured myself that I was acting in a manner that was appropriate. I hoped that I wouldn’t come to regret it.
Sophie was seen clapping at a puppet show, giggling on a carousel, and holding a balloon in the collection of photographs that he provided to me later that afternoon. For the first time in years, I allowed myself to believe that perhaps he had turned out differently. She was smiling in every single one of them.
I had just finished cleaning the kitchen and getting ready for her return on Sunday when I heard the ringing of my phone. Hannah, who is my sister, was here.
“Mia, how could you have allowed this to take place?” Her tone was one of disbelief as she asked.
What are you going to do? I stated that. “Daniel promised her that she would have a fun weekend, so he took her to the theater and the park.”
Hannah’s voice became deafening. Oh, my God. But you have no idea. Just now, I came across it on Instagram.
I felt a chilling sensation go over me. It is unclear what you are referring about.
She conveyed the message, “I am sending you a screenshot right now.”
The ringer on my phone. The photo that appeared caused a rumbling sensation in my stomach.
Daniel, who was dressed in a suit, was standing next to a woman who was dressed in a bridal gown. This is Chloe, his fiancee.
And in the middle of them, my daughter was standing there, holding a small bouquet and wearing a white frock with ruffles that I had never seen before. This is my Sophie.
In spite of the fact that she had been informed that she would be spending the weekend with her father, my daughter ended up being sent to their wedding to serve as a flower girl. It had not been demanded of me. There was no one who had informed me.
A number of hashtags were included in the caption, including #OurDay, #CompleteFamily, #MyPrincess, and #FlowerGirl.
I contacted Daniel while I was seeing red with wrath. Immediately to the voicemail. I attempted it once more. None of it.
I was looking at the background of the picture when I suddenly realized that I was familiar with the location. It was a farm on the outskirts of town that had a glass gazebo. It was something I had driven by hundreds of times.
It was likely that they were still present.
It was then that I went and got my keys. The image of Sophie’s bewildered little face in the photograph was repeating over and over in my head while my pulse raced. In her mind, she was there to spend time with her father. What she didn’t realize was that she was a prop for their “perfect day.”
They were located close to the welcome area when I arrived at the location. While Chloe was displaying her ring to her pals, she was laughing with them. Daniel was standing close, drinking champagne as if he hadn’t just lied to both his daughter and to me.
I pushed my way through the crowd, ignoring the inquisitive looks and conversations that were taking place behind my back.
The outfit that Sophie was wearing was rumpled, and she was sitting on a bench by herself, holding her stuffed rabbit. As soon as she got a glimpse of me, her face brightened up.
“Mommy, would you mind if we went home right now?” While she was holding out her arms, she whispered.
When I picked her up, I held her tightly in my arms. “You are correct, sweetie. The time has come for us to return home.
It was at that moment when Chloe made her appearance, maintaining her phony smile.
A “Wait!” she exclaimed. This is the family photo that we have not yet taken!
A photograph of the family. When I heard those words, my skin crawled.
I was fixated on her. You used my daughter as a prop for your wedding that you posted on Instagram. No, she is not your flower girl; rather, she is my child. And she was completely clueless about the reason she was in this place.
Chloe simply shrugged her shoulders and added, “Well, she looks adorable.” The photographs need the presence of a young girl. In any case, it is not as if we had one of our own… yet.
At the moment when I was about to release every syllable that I had been keeping to myself for years, another voice interrupted me.
As Chloe stepped forward, one of her bridesmaids, a tall woman with auburn hair, took the initiative. The woman responded by saying, “She planned this.” According to Chloe, she was in need of a flower girl, and she promised that she would convince Daniel to “lend his daughter” for the weekend. The statement that she made, which I will paraphrase, was, “Her mother will believe anything if it’s for father-daughter time.”
The audience reacted with gasps of surprise. Chloe let out a feeble laugh. Oh no, she’s simply envious of you. Making an effort to spoil my day.”
But I could see by the expressions on people’s faces that they had had enough of what I had to say.
When I turned around, I saw Daniel’s cousin, who was one of the groomsmen. Dear Mia, I am so sorry. Unbeknownst to me, they had been lying to you.
I was too exhausted to respond, so I just nodded. I had had enough of it.
Sophie was hauled out of that location without me having to utter a single word. I did not turn around to look back.
A number of Chloe’s pals had stopped following her on social media by the time Monday morning rolled around. Photographs from the wedding were removed from her Instagram account.
To tell you the truth, I wasn’t surprised. When you utilize the child of another person for a photo opportunity, this is what you end up with.
With hindsight, I am thankful that Hannah called me at the time that she did. If she hadn’t, it’s possible that I wouldn’t have learned about it until it was rather late.
It was because of her that I was able to get Sophie out of there before the night even ended.
Daniel, on the other hand, will not be able to see his daughter in the near future. However, not until he has a better understanding of what it means to be a father.
